Plans are under way for the Curve, a 4,447-square-meter (47,86-square-foot) library and cultural center in the industrial London suburb of Slough. Designed by London-based Bblur Architecture, the complex will contain a library, adult-education facilities, a café, and a performance space. Part of Heart of Slough, an $800 million urban master plan developed by the Slough Borough Council to revitalize 27 downtrodden acres of the city’s downtown, the $19.4 million Curve sits adjacent to St. Ethelbert’s Church. “The new library ‘cuddles and protects’ the church and forms a very simple curved backdrop for St. Ethelbert’s,” says Matthew Bedward, a partner at Bblur, who also notes that the “form of the new library is based on creating a walkthrough between the new crossroads … [created as part of Heart of Slough] and the main civic square of the town center.” The interior’s curved floor plates are designed to create intimately scaled learning spaces for users and to maintain sight lines between the two floors under a photovoltaic-studded roof. Bblur is no stranger to the suburb’s master plan: its new Slough Bus Station opened in May. Construction on the Curve is set to start in early 2012; the building is slated for completion in 2013.

El pasado 6 de diciembre fue puesta la primera piedra para el proyecto del Eco-Parque en Qingdao, en donde se establecerá un gran barrio con diseño ecológico con sectores de vivienda y de trabajo. Este proyecto ubicado en la costa del mar amarillo en China está diseñado por los arquitectos von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (GMP) y su principal valor es el hecho de que representa un acuerdo entre China y Alemania.
El diseño se hizo con el apoyo de varias entidades y consultores en temas de sustentabilidad, desarrolladouna lista de criterios y medidas de integración, proporcionando una gran lista de fuentes de energía renovables, como por ejemplo energía eólica, geotérmica y solar.
El proyecto tiene más de 10 km2 y su casco urbano es del tamaño del barrio berlinés de Mitte. El sitio se extiende a partir de una cadena montañosa en el sur de la bahía, en el noreste.

En su diseño, los arquitectos incorporan las características paisajísticas de Qingdao – sus formaciones rocosas y verdes llanuras.

Las cortas distancias entre los barrios, los usos mixtos y la densidad y el tipo de edificios, que son hasta ocho pisos de altura, apoyan la conservación de energía en el desarrollo urbano.

Para el ultimo diseño realizado para el Museo de Beijing, Ben van Berkel y UNStudio han diseñado una expresión formal que rescata la cultura China para crear una arquitectura que ofrece dinámicamente una variedad de espacios para las colecciones NAMOC. Sobre la base de dualidades que unen – pasado y futuro, día y noche, adentro y afuera, calma y dinámica, grande y chico, individual y colectivo – los dos volúmenes referencian los antiguos tambores de piedra chinos funcionando en un lenguaje contemporáneo como una fachada que aplica como medio de comunicación con proyecciones de arte.

El museo se enfoca en crear una variedad de galerías para el trabajo artístico que ofrece posibilidades de iluminación y espacios de muro en orden de proveer a los artistas y expositores las condiciones optimas para poder mostrar su trabajo y comunicar las ideas. Las circulaciones son divididas en dos distintas rutas, las cuales conducen al los grupos de visitantes al rededor de secuencias temáticas de arte y programas adicionales.

Los diseñadores explicaron que mientras la arquitectura del museo es representada por el antiguo artefacto de los tambores de piedra, el arte dentro de él representa su espíritu, su esencia. En la misma manera que los ágiles trazos de tinta en una pintura china le dan espíritu a un blanco papel, estas colecciones de arte entregan vida al museo.

Además de los espacios interiores, la situación urbana del museo era de extrema importancia. Las mesetas públicas y zócalos urbanos de la zona cultural sirven como conectores para entre la ciudad y el museo mediante la conexión del nivel de la calle, el metro, y los volúmenes del museo.

Paris-based architecture firm AWP has won the competition to design and develop 'jardins de l'arche', a series of urban spaces within the la défense central business district of paris, France. Public plazas and follies placed between the grande arche and the seine-arche will generate an axial link. Covering an area of 30,000 square meters, the masterplan will be placed above the underground A14 route, metro line 1 and RER A. A continuous ramp reaching 600 meters in length will create a fluid movement between the arena 92 stadium, terrasses de nanterre, residences and hotel, passing by extensive gardens and small scale pavilions for multifunctional purposes.

The new structures will provide an architectural continuity throughout the landscape merging the existing and new buildings.A large plaza and multiple kiosks will introduce a harmonious visual vocabulary which is also capable of withstanding tremendous crowds of visitors for events.
The fusion of spaces provide vegetated sanctuaries with the ability to activate different locations within the site.

Construction for the 'porsgrunn maritime museum and science center' in Norway by copenhagen and berlin-based practice COBE architects and danish firm transform has just begun. Dedicated to the history of
shipping which led to the development of the encompassing industrial region, the structure overlooks a river which was also used for the process.
Showing sensitivity to the quaint scale of the existing buildings, the square footprint is subdivided into nine volumes.

A series of pitched roofs oriented in diverse directions and heights cap each of the units. an aluminum facade wraps the exterior to define the angles while responding to the continuously changing light and color conditions of the sky and water.

A promenade guides visitors to the interior's public functions which are arranged on the ground floor. A central stair leads away from the multifunctional space and into the enclosed exhibitions of the first level. The ceilings range in height to create clearly defined exhibits on smaller or larger collections but is flexible to unite the area showing the full extents of the white box.

International multidisciplinary practice aedas has proposed 'the urban crossing', a mixed-use project to be placed within the linkong business park in Shanghai, China. Adjacent to an existing canal, a promenade and public plaza with grand stairs emerge from the water to lead

visitors up towards a void between two office towers. The bisected volumes are shifted and then interconnected with two elevated passages which weave the exterior form together into an iconic gateway.

The visually unified building creates diverse internal areas through a series of platforms at varied heights offering different perspectives of the city.

Serving as a focal point to the existing complex, the program will contain offices, retail, galleries and a conference center. the blending of functions and vicinity to the waterfront generates a vibrant and attractive environment for both impromptu gatherings and large-scale events. Within the bridge, a sky lounge above the central void will offer unobstructed panoramic vistas of the landscaped grounds.

Copenhagen-based practice BIG architects have created 'transitlager', the winning competition proposal to renovate and extend a warehouse in the industrial district of basel, switzerland. Dating from the 1960s, the 18,000 square meter concrete structure will receive an additional 7,000 square meters for residences and arts-related spaces to transform the upcoming dreispitz neighborhood into a bustling arts district. visually separated into two stacked volumes, the combination will become a hybrid of mixed-use program,
rearranging the distribution within the existing floors to merge activity from the art, commerce, work and living spaces.

Encompassed by a network of intersecting railways, loading docks and turning radiuses, the zigzagged facade and pointed corners become generated by the infrastructure.
Connections between existing public areas and nearby botanical garden enforce the dynamic location of this new center.
Additional vibrant urban spaces and peaceful gardens provide diverse atmospheres for various lifestyles and
activities. The folded perimeter of the upper structure optimizes interior daylight conditions and outward views from rooftop terraces placed within generated niches.
The exterior reflects the geometries of the surrounding context, creating a fresh appearance with a familiar character.

Construction of this apartment block with a stepped elevation
by Mexican firm Rojkind
Arquitectos is due to commence this summer in Monterrey,
Mexico.

The ground and first floors of High Park will accommodate
shops with eight storeys of apartments stepping backwards and
forwards above.

The setbacks will create both sheltered and open terraces for
residents with views towards the mountains.

Each of the 32 apartment interiors have been designed by one
of six different local designers, creating a varied layout for
each one.

A car park will be located across four storeys below ground.

To counterbalance the strong sun, the floor plates shift in

Norwegian architects Snøhetta have unveiled their design for an extension to the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), which will double the gallery’s
exhibition and education spaces.

A glass-fronted gallery along Howard Street will create a new
entrance to the museum on a part of the site currently occupied
by a fire station.

From here a five metre-wide pathway will lead up a set of
stairs and across a public square towards Natoma Street.

The new buildings will be over 15 metres taller than the existing SFMOMA
building, which was completed by architect Mario Botta in 1995.

Dutch architects
MVRDV have designed this creative industries office block in
Amsterdam that has letters of the alphabet cut out of the facade.

Each cut-out is the window to an office unit and each letter
signifies the address extension for the occupying business.

On the east facade of the Alphabet Building a series of
dotted windows spell out the number 52, relating to the address.

All letters of the alphabet have been used apart from I and
Q. The original design included Q (as shown in top image) but
was later replaced by Z .

The project is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Alphabet Building Amsterdam
MVRDV designs creative industry hub
Amsterdam based project development corporation NIC started
sale of the MVRDV designed Alphabet building. In Amsterdam small
and mid-size creative companies have trouble finding suitable
office space. The Alphabet building communicates through a clear
exterior design which reveals on the East façade the house
number and at the main façade its extension for each company, a
letter of the alphabet. The interior is highly flexible and
completed with a rough and pure finishing. The 3200m2 creative
industry building will be completed in 2012 according to high
energy efficiency standards.

On the East facade the house number, on the front facade
its extension.

The creative industry has seemingly unrealistic demands when
it comes to office locations: a incubator of creative ideas
which is spacious and inspiring with a differentiating design at
a great location with car access. The Alphabet building in the
Amsterdam port refurbishment Minervahaven unites all these
qualities. The former port is currently refurbished to become a
creative hub.

Behind each letter is a flexible office unit

The building is on a relatively small site of 30 x 30 meters
and consists of a transparent plinth with a compact office block
on top. Behind each letter of the façade the building offers a
flexible unit of 128m2, the units can be sold independently or
as a series of letters. Design studio Thonik will occupy the top
floor or the letters A to F. As it was impossible to put the
entire alphabet on the façade the letters I and Q are missing:
the IQ is inside the building.

Interior finishings are concrete, aluminium and steel

The interior finishing follows the demand of creative
companies, large loft like spaces with a rough finishing: no
double ceilings, exposed materials such as concrete, aluminium
and steel. A number of sustainable technologies give the
building an excellent energy profile. Parking is located inside
the plinth, circulation and spacious outside areas at the back
of the building.

Cultural Complex Longgang District | Mecanoo | Arquitectura 3d

have won a competition to design a cultural centre in Shenzhen
with this design composed of a row of overhanging red volumes.

The volumes create arches above routes from a new public
square to the business district beyond.

Shenzhen, China
Mecanoo designed the winning competition entry for a new
83,500 m2 cultural complex with a public art museum, science
museum, youth centre and a bookshop, public square and parking
in the Shenzhen district. The new cultural and commercial
complex will provide the district with its own landmark and
destination and transform the existing Longcheng park into a
lively destination point. It will form a dynamic link between
the commercial business district, a formal park and gardens and
one of the district’s main thoroughfares. The new museum complex
will unify the evolving urban fabric and generate a vibrant
downtown.

Connecting the cultural complex with the surrounding areas and
new residential development was the key consideration for the
design. The linearity of the existing urban masterplan created a
barrier between the western development area and Longcheng park,
further cutting up the area and contributing to its lack of
urban vitality. Longcheng park will become a lively square which
will further strengthen the quarter’s identity and provide
residents and visitors with a much needed sense of place.

Four building volumes emerge from the ground to create a series
of arches and sheltered public event spaces which frame the
central square. Rounded shapes respect the natural flow of
pedestrians through the site. These open arches serve as filters,
attractors and reference points and allow the building
programmes to expand outside while formally symbolising openness
and connection. Different programmes strategically located on
the ground floor open outwards into the exterior public space
including the city in the exhibition. From within the building
interior, two bridges will link to the commercial plinths of the
new residential area. Cultural and commercial programmes are
linked to contribute to an urban symbiosis.

Norwegian design team, Eriksen Skajaa Architects urban study for the redevelopment of a former industrial site in Strusshamn, a Norwegian coastal settlement.

Strusshamn is a settlement on the southwest side of Askøy, an island outside of Bergen on the west coast of Norway, with strong ties to the ocean. The fjord was used forntransport due to lack of roads and it was an important economic resource. When this changed and the car became the most important way of communication two centers developed without a clear connection to each other.

The site in Strusshamn is a former boat building factory for Viksund Boats that was bought by the municipality to make a new zoning plan to avoid heavy industry to be established in the future in the old, preserved harbour environment. In our study we are looking for a way to connect the two parts of Strusshamn.

By simple means like improving and defining different surfaces, re-establishing a hidden river, and introducing public spaces of different character we redefine Strusshamn and prepare for the integration of the new development at the Viksund site.

The study examines three different combinations of density and program on the site, but with a similar layout and approach to the site. The layout is based on analysis of climate and landscape with an aim to create good public spaces and buildings with access to light and the spectacular view the landscape offers. A continuous public space with piers, public spaces, a promenade and backyards attach the new development to the rest of Strusshamn.

A central canal on the site connects the two parts of the site together and increases the quality of both and this way not only the houses on the waterfront have access to the qualities of the harbor environment.

Towards the fjord to the south lies a large public space for the whole of Strusshamn.The new development is based on the historical buildings in Strusshamn.

Small volumes that sometimes grow together and create larger units characterize the historical buildings. The buildings are close to the water and create spaces between that vary in size and quality. With those aspects in mind, the new development is a continuation and extension of the historical place, while at the same time demonstrating the possibilities of developing these kinds of sites into areas with more dense or urban structures.

This pavilion by Italian firm stARTT has won the first international edition of the MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program and will be installed outside the Zaha Hadid-designedMAXXI museum in Rome this June.

As inaugural winners of the YAP_MAXXI award stARTT’s installation, entitled Whatami, will feature a series of mini hills around the concrete plaza with pools of water in between.

The artificial landscape will be littered with clusters of funnel-shaped canopies representing flowers.

stARTT SELECTED AS WINNER OF THE INAUGURAL YOUNG ARCHITECTS PROGRAM AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF XXI CENTURY ARTS (MAXXI) IN ROME

NEW YORK, February 16, 2011—The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, and the National Museum of XXI Century Arts of Rome announce Interboro Partners of Brooklyn, NY, as the winner of the 12th annual Young Architects Program in New York, and start, of Rome, as the winner of the first annual YAP_MAXXI Young Architects Program in Rome.

Now in its 12th edition, the Young Architects Program at MoMA and MoMA PS1 has been committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop highly innovative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that provides shade, seating, and water. The architects must also work within guidelines that address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.

For the first time, MoMA and MoMA PS1 are partnering with another institution, MAXXI in Rome, to create the first international edition of the Young Architects Program. stARTT has been chosen from among five European finalists to create an innovative event space in the MAXXI piazza opening in June.

WHATAMI by stARTT is based on the manufacturing of an artificial archipelago-hill, generating smaller green areas in the garden and potentially outside the museum. The hill works as a garden, injecting “green” into the concrete plateau of the museum’s outdoor space, allowing it to serve as a stage and/or parterre for concerts and other events, or as a space to rest and look at the museum itself.

The artificial landscape will be punctuated by large “flowers” providing light, shadow, water, and sound. The materials proposed for the installation involve a two-fold recycling process, the supplying of the materials for the construction (straw, geo-textile, plastic) and the dismantling of the “hill” (turf, lighting).

Opened in May 2010, MAXXI was designed by Zaha Hadid and awarded Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) Stirling Prize for architecture, and has already gained a place among the elite international contemporary art and architecture museums.

The other YAP_MAXXI finalists were Raffaella De Simone/Valentina Mandalari (Palermo); Ghigos Ideas (Lissone/Mi, Davide Crippa, Barbara Di Prete and Francesco Tosi); Asif Khan (London, United Kingdom); and Langarita Navarro Arquitectos (Madrid, Spain, María Langarita and Víctor Navarro).

Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator of Architecture at MAXXI, explains, “We’re very happy with the results of this program for three main reasons. First, the collaboration with MoMA proved as effective and productive as we hoped, finally allowing us a surprising insight into the most recent research in terms of architecture, public space, and landscape.

Second, we were able to discover an unexpected positive quality of answers by the Italian and European young (under 35) architects involved in the project, all proposing fascinating, innovative and well developed proposals. Third, we’re delighted that we were able to choose a winning proposal which incorporates a MAXXI_specific approach to the issues of ecology, recycle, and public space.”

Concept villas for golf and spa resort, Dubrovnik, by Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects have designed two prototype villas a for a site overlooking the historic town of Dubrovnik in Croatia.

The concepts, named “Rock” (top) and “Shell” (above), have been developed to help define the architectural style of the resort, which will eventually consist of 400 villas plus hotels and a golf course.

Concept Design Report

Introduction

The brief called for the design of two prototype Villas for a new Golf and Spa Resort in Croatia overlooking the old town of Dubrovnik. The total development comprises 400 villas, two 5* hotels, luxury apartments, retail facilities, a spa and an 18 hole golf course including a golf resort club house.

A recently developed master plan determines the perimeter and size of the parcels, which range from 12,000m2 to 20,000m2. The site of the prototype villas is located at the edge of the plateau with picturesque views. The prototype villas shall define the overall architectural design of the resort.

Site

The area of development is located north of Dubrovnik, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The land comprises 430 hectare and is located on a high plateau approximately 300m to 400m above sea level, north of the old town of Dubrovnik.

At the southern edge of the project site, the terrain slopes steeply towards the sea. The terrain also slightly slopes from west to east. The elevated level of the site allows for magnificent views in all directions.

Towards south the owner will enjoy sea views and views of the old town of Dubrovnik. In north direction one can enjoy picturesque mountain and landscape views.

Design Concept Option Rock

Zaha Hadid Architects architectural proposal is a distinct and unique structure with a strong sense of identity and character.

It has a highly expressive, sculptural quality, infused with a sense of light and space. Light and views are the driving forces of the house.

The design is inspired by the Croatian karst topography. Typical karst elements such as sharp-edged cliffs, caves, dolines and sinkholes are adopted by our design.

The building is positioned at the very edge of the slope to take full advantage of the views. The park and garden area to the north will be used as recreation area and buffer zone to the existing village and the semi-public road.

Design Concept Option Shell

Zaha Hadid Architects design offers long views internally and engages with the surrounding landscape. The prototype for this luxurious private residence has been developed in response to the programme, the landscape and the views.

Internationally renowned Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group has revealed their design of 'west 57th', a new 600-unit residential building in new York city.
Located between 11th and 12th avenues adjacent to the Hudson River, the building is the firm's first project in northern America.

'New York is rapidly becoming an increasingly green and livable city. The transformation of the Hudson River waterfront and the highline into green parks, the ongoing effort to plant a million trees, the pedestrianization of Broadway and the creation of more miles of bicycle lanes than the entire city of my native Copenhagen are all evidence of urban oases appearing all over the city. With west 57th, we attempt to continue this transformation into the heart of the city fabric - into the center of a city block,' says Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG.

Sampling from both european and american typologies of density housing, the design explores a new hybrid standard that combines a traditional courtyard building with Manhattan’s high-rise form.

After compactness and efficiency is achieved through a perimeter block organization, the north-east corner is pulled up vertically to a height of 142 m. by keeping the other three corners low to street level, the courtyard is opened towards the Hudson river, providing views and sunlight into every unit.

The dynamic form of the building shifts dramatically according to the viewer's vantage point: from the west side highway, the building takes on a warped pyramid-like appearance while on west 58th street; the residential complex resembles a slender glass spire. The courtyard remains visually accessible from the street to serve as an extension from the adjacent greenery of the Hudson River Park.

En Agosto se informó que el ganador del concurso fue el proyecto presentado por los norteamericanos Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

La propuesta para el Broad Museum ha sido realizada y ya podemos observarla en su etapa de diseño final. Situado adyacentemente al Walt Disney Concert Hall de Frank Gehry’s y el Museum of Contemporary Art de Arata Isozaki, el nuevo museo se ha convertido en una parte clave de la reurbanización para la Grand Avenue que intenta revitalizar esa vía central y darle la fuerza que ha perdido con el tiempo.

El corazón del diseño se encuentra entre dos largos bloques rectangulares. El bloque de la base sirve como estacionamientos y el bloque superior, contiene los espacios interiores para almacenamiento de obras de arte, archivos y espacios de oficina para la Fundación Broad Art.

La bóveda, el velo, y hundimientos son sólo algunos de los nombres que han sido utilizados por los arquitectos para referirse a las diferentes áreas del diseño total. Una fachada sumamente llamativa, con variadas formas hexagonales en hormigón, se eleva en la esquina formada por 2nd Street y Grand Avenue, muy cercana a el Hall de Disney, crea la entrada principal al Broad Museum.

El velo, envolviendo el espacio de la galería en el tercer piso, la bóveda en el segundo piso y el hall en el nivel de acceso, son las estructuras portantes de la carga proveniente del techo y a su vez actúan como pantalla solar para el edificio. La piel del exterior tiene transparencia y espesor variable en sus cuatro fachadas, y se sumerge en varios puntos de la cara que enfrenta a Grand Avenue, tomando la forma de ventanas hundidas.

Notablemente ausente en el diseño es la intención de permitir interacción entre los autos y el movimiento peatonal. Originalmente ésto no era así, el diseño obligaba a los conductores que se dirigían al estacionamiento a encontrarse con los peatones que accedían por Grand Avenue a través de un gran vidrio, proveyendo al proyecto de un encuentro inevitable. De todas formas, el proyecto aún está en desarrollo y se esperan variaciones con respecto al resultado final.

As a projection of a geometrically perfect circle on to the steep slope, the new gallery is conceived as a courtyard building that combines a pure geometrical layout with a sensitive adaption to the landscape. The three‐dimensional imprint of the landscape creates a protective ring around the museum’s focal point, the sculpture garden where visitors, personnel, exhibition merge with culture and nature, inside and outside.

“The Danish functionalistic architecture in Nuuk is typically square boxes which ignore the unique nature of Greenland. The slope opens up the sculpture garden towards the city and the view, framing both the sculpture garden and museum functions. A rough looking external façade of white concrete will patinate over time and adjust to the local weather, while the circular inner glass façade will consist of a simple and refined frame which contrasts the rough nature and compliments the beautiful view.

The circular shape of the gallery enables a flexible division of the exhibition into different shapes and sizes, creating a unique framework for the museum’s art. Visitor access to the exhibition happens through a covered opening created by a slight lift in the façade into a lobby with a 180 degree panorama view towards the sculpture garden and the fjord as well as access to the common museum functions, including ticket counters, wardrobe, boutique and a café.

The new gallery will create more activity at the waterfront by attracting the whole area is interconnected by a path which like the museum, forms after the shifting inclinations of the terrain. TLS/KVA Team Wins Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition

The bi-coastal urban and landscape design team of TLS/KVA – Tom Leader Studio (Berkeley) and Kennedy & Violich Architecture (Boston) – were named the winning team of the Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition (MR|DC) at a press conference in Minneapolis yesterday.

The TLS/KVA team comprises 14 additional firms, including nine Minnesota partners: Kestrel Design Group, St. Paul on the Mississippi Design Center, SRF Consulting, LBG-Guyton Associates, Donjek, Economic Development Services, Mortensen Construction, Inter-Fluve, and Solid Gold.

TLS/KVA was first selected as one of four finalists in November 2010, from a pool of 55 Request for Qualifications submittals representing 14 countries on five continents. The other three finalists were award-winning teams led by Ken Smith Workshop (New York City), Stoss Landscape Urbanism (Boston), and Turenscape (Beijing). The teams impressed an overflow audience at the Walker Art Center, January 27, when they presented their proposals to the public and the competition’s jury. More than 600 people attended the event in person or via live webcast; thousands more viewed the teams’ proposal videos online.

On January 28, the MR|DC’s 14-member jury of nationally known parks and design professionals and local decision‐makers met to evaluate the proposals. The jury’s evaluation was based on the criteria and deliverables outlined in the Competition Brief, as well as how well the proposals met the competition’s stated goals: establish parks as the economic engine for development along the river; knit communities on both sides of the riverfront to and across the river; and re‐focus Minneapolis and the region toward one of the three great rivers of the world.

“Among a pool of proposals worthy of America’s fourth coast, TLS/KVA’s RIVERFIRST stood out as particularly well suited to the Upper Riverfront in Minneapolis. The team grounded their proposal in proactive outreach to the community, demonstrated extensive research, and posited several multi-‐layered solutions unique to these 11 miles of riverfront and the habitat, communities, businesses, infrastructure, and culture intrinsic to our region,” says David Fisher, Superintendent Emeritus of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and an MR|DC jury member. Fisher noted that the jury valued the participation of the other three finalists and the talent and effort represented in the proposals they submitted.

The TLS/KVA RIVERFIRST proposal offers a comprehensive remediation of the city’s storm water management system and its conceptual transformation into a system of ‘tributaries’ that are naturally cleaned with planted bio‐filtration landscapes and returned to the river. The topography of the RIVERFIRST design is guided by the dynamics of the river. Where water scours and erodes, carving design principles are used to create water remediation ravines and terrace overlooks on the North East Bluffs. Where the river deposits new material, accretive principles of design are used to mold and shape land berms for the new Park.

The recovery of Northside Wetlands, and the design of storm water remediation ‘ravines’ on the North East bluffs integrate public parkland with municipal eco-infrastructure and a wide range of recreation activities. The TLS/KVA design uses site topography to reconnect the Northside’s historic Farview Park with the River, urban agriculture and new skilled jobs in a proposed River City Innovation District. The site’s sloped cross-section provides for a compact footprint for a Green Port and Green Economy Industries. Sculpted landforms enable pedestrian and bike/ski River Shore Trails to rise above existing barge terminals allowing for immediate, continuous public Riverfront access. The RIVERFIRST design for Scherer Park restores Hall’s Island with public swim/skate and kayak launching facility and provides for sustainable Housing, Live/Work Studios and an Arts Center. At Scherer Park, the river produces its own dynamic landscape of sand bars and shallow pools that shift according to winter melts, patterns of sediment deposition and river flows.

Wetlands: View from barrier islands

Real time water monitoring from the Minnesota USGS website is made public with energy efficient, smart illumination along Knot Bridges which link the creative energy of the NE Arts District with the River City Innovation District and Downtown. Floating Biohaven Islands made of recycled water bottles anchored to existing bridge piers provide seven acres of protected riparian habitat for migrating birds and endangered wildlife. The River Talk mobile phone app and solar powered Park WiFi Network create unprecedented opportunities for local and national public education about river ecology attracting world‐class institutional, corporate and organizational partners to the Minneapolis Parks.

The transition to the Minneapolis riverfront initiative With their selection as the winning team, TLS/KVA will be awarded a riverfront parks commission and become part of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s Minneapolis riverfront initiative, of which the design competition was the first phase. While the team’s RiverFIRST proposal contained many specific design schemes, no particular location, project or feature has yet been identified for development. As the design competition concludes, the Park Board and its partners will engage in a four‐month transition phase to identify next steps.

“With the success of Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition, the largest design competition in Minneapolis history, we’ve established that the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board can achieve great things on behalf of the people of Minneapolis and the region,” says Jayne Miller, Superintendent of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Beginning in the 1980s, a Park Board-‐led revitalization of the Downtown Central Riverfront leveraged private investments that resulted in nearly 10,000 retained or created jobs. “We intend to replicate that same level of results-‐focused implementation with the next phases of our riverfront initiative.”

Scherer Park Kayak Launch

During the transition phase, the Park Board will establish a steering committee made up of individuals and organizations with experience stewarding large-scale, multi-disciplinary public projects or who have a vested interest in the riverfront. The steering committee will work along several parallel tracks: organizational development; planning, design and construction; resource identification; and on-going community engagement and two-way communication. In June 2011, the Park Board will announce the process for the next steps in the initiative.

Project Description from the Architects:
Increasingly, aquifers and surface water irrigation systems are being depleted in the agrarian farm lands that feed our urban centers. As a result of poor, or uncertain, water availability our foods are being increasingly treated with chemicals and water wars are being waged around the world in agrarian cultures. Simultaneously, the labor pool of farm hands, despite mechanization, remains a crucial component of the food industry. Many of these seasonal laborers live in shanties or decrepit out buildings ill suited for quality living.

This 800 square foot farm house addresses these two critical and contemporary concerns. The first being the availability of irrigation water in the farmlands that feed urban centers. Depleting aquifers and shrinking rivers are increasing the need for an infrastructural intervention. Secondly, the need for seasonal migrant worker housing in the agrarian realm is concern for future productivity of the food system. The Farm House proposes a small scale home connected to hydrological cycles for purposes of agricultural irrigation. The house is designed to collect, store, and distribute rain water and snow melt in an elastic exterior skin. The capacity of the house to perform like a cactus in biology or a canteen in technology enables the home to become an integral component in the operations of food productivity, easing withdrawals on river systems and aquifers.

The geometry of the house is in service of storm water collection. The exterior skin is made with rubber ‘canteens’ that fill with water which can be used in times of lower water supply. One skin can hold up to 17,000 gallons of water, making for a total capacity of 34,000 gallons...enough water to irrigate almost 50 acres for nearly 1 month during the cultivation season. Using an annual average of rain fall in the mid-western United States of 36” annual rain fall (= 3 acre feet = 1 million gallons), the canteens could fill numerous (approx. 20) times per year to full capacity. The system connects to existing irrigation infrastructures and the houses themselves are modular, allowing them to aggregate.

The swelling and contraction of the skin throughout the seasons indexes the hydrological cycle, tracking the environment through the dynamism of the building form and texture. As the canteens fill, the skin stretches, revealing an underlying patterning and assembly of the exterior rubber skin. The chronicling of the environment through the building’s formal change with regard to water fosters simultaneous architectural conditions of change and permanence, acting as a visual indication against which to measure hydration conditions. The Farm House initiates temporary forms and textures within a permanent system of water collection and distribution for the purposes of easing ground and surface water withdrawls for irrigation.

CRAB Wins New Soheil Abedian School of Architecture Competition

The competition for the new Soheil Abedian School of Architecture for Bond University in the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia has been won by CRAB – the studio of Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham - in association with Brit Andresen.

The structure will sit on Arata Isozaki’s 1987 campus and will be attached to the University’s School of Sustainability. It presents a raw but highly modulated composition of fluted timber and panel surfaces. These are countered internally by large concrete ‘scoops’ that catch the bright light but screen out the direct sun. Between, lie a series of subtly varied two-storey studio barns that give onto a gently climbing street. Running along the other side of the street are a chain of offices and laboratories.

Apart from minute attention to natural climatic cooling and University’s target of 6-star green rating, the design is characterized by offering a variety of particular and memorable spaces – particularly the ‘scoops’ where formal and informal sessions, such as crits, demonstrations, experiments and constructions can be held. The building also digs into the ground so that the workshops can open out into a ‘pit’ where experimental and demonstration projects are exposed to the deck and garden area. Here – in keeping with the Queensland lifestyle, there is a surround of boardwalks and outdoor slopes.

The design is undoubtedly the product of experience: Cook and Andresen (respectively recipients of British and Australian Royal Gold Medals for architecture that both included teaching in their citations), look back together with Robotham, on more than 110 years of teaching between them!
For CRAB it is an opportunity to act as an intellectual balance with their Law School for the Vienna Economic University (now under construction). For Cook it is a second occurrence of the ‘poacher-turned-gamekeeper’ syndrome: in 2000 (with Colin Fournier) his long experience as exhibitor, curator and gallerist was background to a radical design.

From the Competition Report: 'Forested Pads and Silent Scoops'
Bond’s new School of Architecture might be experienced as a varied and episodic journey ; sheltered and determined to the north , the building is airy, effortless and free to the south.
The curvature of its spinal interior route establishes a new soft core for the North West Quadrant – a core populated by the life of the school by student experimentation, social gatherings, small lectures, crits and spontaneous events.

Leaving the existing spine pathway, the broad internal path dives under the nose of the quiet-study strip and runs along the side of the ‘scoops’. The path rises slowly upwards from the entrance – echoing the topography of adjoining garden.
From this street the faculty’s studios and larger gathering spaces spread out onto a terraced deck – which itself melts into the re-vegetated* garden.

We wish to create a very ambient building where the individual can really identify with the nature of his or her activity. Therefore the components of the building – the pads and scoops each have notable shifts of direction or size.
The wrapping of the building is a softer progression. Undulating in plan and sheltering from direct northern light (the sunny side) and filtering southern light into the interior. Avoiding glare and overheating.

Slovenian office SADAR+VUGA has shared with us its entry for the Block 39, Center for the Promotion of Science competition. The science center building is part of the master plan competition project in Belgrade, Serbia.
SADAR+VUGA's master plan design incorporates the existing building of the Faculty of Drama Arts with its proposed extension, and provides four new Faculties, a mathematics gymnasium, a science center with a 50m tall tower, as well as the new building of the Centre of Promotion of Science.

The Center for Promotion of Science building is part of the masterplan competition project in Belgrade, Serbia. Our masterplan design incorporates the existing building of the Faculty of Drama Arts with its proposed extension, and provides four new Faculties, a mathematics gymnasium, a science center with 50m tower, as well as the new building of the Centre of Promotion of Science. All are positioned on 8 islands. Among the islands, 5 plazas are developed.

The CFPS building appears as a large platform from which a playful and relaxed manner promotes science to the widest public audience, and invited them to participate.
CFPS is a ring whose form is truly symmetrical. It is a one storey building, touching the ground with four big legs connected with four arches. In the center of the building is an outdoor atrium, from which we enter the main exhibition floor via escalators. The atrium is infilled with a forest of trees and three pairs of escalators as a main public circulation device of the building.
The forest atrium is the hub of the building. Conceptually, it positions Nature and natural systems as an ongoing source for scientific development. We, as human beings, are invited to start exploring Science from Nature.

From the Big Lawn surrounding the building we enter the atrium under four arches. We are, as visitors, in the centre on the building, in the nature, surrounded by science. We take a route through main indoor exhibition level around the atrium and then continue to the large flat roof, to the science garden. Here we explore outdoor scientific experiments, participate in urban farming and play on the playground. Here we are in the science environment with a view down to the forest atrium, to the Big Lawn, the entire Science Campus and New Belgrade.
Our experience of science versus nature is thus accomplished.
The perimeter facade of the CFPS building is developed as a continuous belt of interchanging translucent, transparent and opaque glazing. The glass is set behind or between five white aluminum cladded stripes which embrace the entire building. The five stripes facilitate a smooth transition from four arching geometries into the flat roof. Between the stripes, on the southern and southwestern side of the building, solar tubes are mounted.

The perimeter wall of the atrium is entirely glazed, offering a view from the exhibition floor to the forest of the atrium. The wooden verandah embracing the atrium is partially covered by a large pergola.
The four legs and the arches connecting them are painted in white reflecting color.
The atrium ground is partially paved, partially grassed.
The main exhibition floor is entirely paved in wood. Its gridded ceiling has artificial lighting embedded in the grid. Its intensity can be changed according to different exhibition settings.

Foster + Partners have unveiled designs for a museum on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.

The Zayed National Mueum will feature five lightweight steel towers resembling birds’ wings, set within a landscaped mound with gallery spaces located at ground level.

The latticed towers will be designed to act as thermal chimneys that will draw cool air into the spaces below, whilst cooling pipes buried beneath will release fresh air into the lobby.

Named after UAE founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the museum will be dedicated to the history and culture of the country.

The museum is the latest superstar-designed building to be unveiled for Saadiyat Island cultural district; a performing arts centre by Zaha Hadid, a Guggenheim by Frank Gehry, a branch of the Louvre museum by Jean Nouvel and a maritime museum by Tadao Ando are already underway.

La sala de estar agradece a las pared de vidrio totalmente abiertas, está completamente integrada al entorno natural. La transformación de Kurla en el norte de Mumbai (India), se caracteriza por la proliferación incesante de nuevos edificios de oficinas, donde los típicos bloques de 5-6 plantas adopta los exclusivos lobbys corporativos como una estrategia para importar la imagen de la CDB en esta antigua pequeña zona industrial.

Chris Lee y Kapil Gupta del estudio Serie Architects del Reino Unido tratan de resistir esta tendencia con su proyecto creando una clara separación entre la pública ciudad existente y la exclusiva entidad corporativa proyectada. Su propuesta se inicia con el replanteamiento del vestíbulo y el atrio de los típicos bloques de oficina.

La Oficina RC puede ser vista como un solo bloque de oficinas, rajado en 2 bloques más pequeños, pero unidos por un espacio público vacío. El vestíbulo principal y el espacio del lobby, como nuevo espacio público, se concibe como una serie de volúmenes en rotación, articulados por superficies regladas. En cada rotación diferentes, el atrio y los lobbys asumen distintas funciones programáticas.

Empezando desde planta baja, el típico lobby empresarial excusivo se transforma en un paseo público, conecta la vía del lado oeste con el lago en el norte.

A medida que el atrio rota y se eleva, ofrece otros programas públicos a lo largo de su superficie reglada: cafeterías, gimnasio, terrazas cubiertas y salones.

El atrio rotatorio también actúa como un receptor de luz, tomando la luz a lo largo de su rotación, iluminando la superficie reglada y reflejando la luz en el corazón del edificio.

The ongoing transformation of Kurla in north Mumbai, India is characterized by the relentless proliferation of new office blocks, where the typical 5-6 storey blocks adopts the exclusive corporate lobbies as a strategy to import the image of the CBD into this former small industrial area.

Chris Lee and Kapil Gupta of UK serie architects seek to resist this tendency with their project to create a clear separation between the public and the existing city and the projected and exclusive corporate entity. their proposal begins with the rethinking of the lobby and atrium of typical office blocks.

The RC office can be seen as a single office block, sliced open into 2 smaller blocks but brought back together by a public void. The main atrium and lobby space as the new public void is conceived as a series of rotating volumes articulated by ruled surfaces.

At each different rotation, the atrium and lobbies takes on a different programmatic role. Starting from the ground, the typically excusive corporate lobby is transformed into a public promenade, connecting the road on the west side of the site to the existing lake on the north.

As the atrium rotates upwards, it dispenses other public program along its ruled surface: cafes, gym, roof decks and lounges. The rotational atrium also acts as a light catcher, drawing light along its rotation, illuminating the ruled surface and reflecting light into the heart of the building.

El área del terreno es de unos 365.000 metros cuadrados y representa el futuro de Sanya como ciudad y complejo turístico internacional. El proyecto de Ciudad Edberg de la firma austríaca Coop Himmelb(l)au recibirá el Premio Sustentabilidad para Futuro Proyecto 2010 entregado por la revista de arquitectura MIPIM . La intención de realizar el rascacielos de oficinas Ciudad Edberg era la de generar un edificio que se correspondiese con el principio de «la estética de la sostenibilidad". A través de una fachada de energía activa y una turbina de viento integrado el edificio está produciendo más energía que la que se realmente consume.

"De acuerdo esto, Ciudad Edberg no es una casa pasiva, sino una casa activa, '- Wolf D. Prix, director de diseño y director general de Coop Himmelb(l)au. El prototipo de la “fachada de energía” es actualmente probado en cooperación con las tecnologías de SFL. Desde 2002, los premios de arquitectura MIPIM para “Futuro Proyecto” han sido concedidos a proyectos no construídos o incompletos.

For their project town town Edberg, Austrian firm Coop Himmelb(l)au will receive the sustainability award for the 2010 MIPIM architectural review future project awards. The intention of developing the office high-rise town town Edberg was to generate a building which correlates to the principle 'aesthetics of sustainability'. Through an energy active facade and an integrated wind turbine the building is producing more energy than it is actually consuming.

'According to that, town town Edberg is not a passive house but an active house,' - Wolf D. Prix, design principal and CEO of Coop Himmelb(l)au. The prototype of the energy façade is currently tested in cooperation with SFL technologies. Since 2002 the MIPIM architectural review future projects awards have been granted for un-built or incomplete projects.

El nuevo Centro de Estudios e Investigación de Petróleo Rey Abdullah (KAPSARC) es un símbolo tangible de la innovación ambiental. La propuesta de Morphosis Architects redefine el campus tradicional en un plan maestro tridimensional que interconecta la forma construida con el paisaje, conteniendo zonas de programa público y privado, al mismo tiempo que genera intersecciones y superposiciones entre ambos. Incluidos en este “entorno modelado”, un edificio híbrido emblemático surge en medio de un oasis protegido de flora nativa del desierto y piscinas cristalinas enfriadas naturalmente.

Tradicionalmente, los pueblos oasis amurallados (como la antigua ciudad de Dir'iyah, el hogar ancestral de los Al-Sauds y el lugar de nacimiento de la Unión Saudi-Wahabí) han incubado la expansión de la cultura en la región. El nuevo plan maestro de KAPSARC se basa en el modelo histórico de la villa oasis: piscinas de agua reciclada enfrían naturalmente el aire y crean un clima habitable; jardines de plantas del desierto en peligro de extinción rodean y se entretejen en la arquitectura; y el icónico edificio del centro de investigación emerge en el corazón del sitio, con paredes que irradian protección tanto literal como simbólicamente. Como si fuesen generados por el dinamismo del núcleo de investigación, las vallas de seguridad y las barras de luz incandescente que emanan desde el edificio central se convierten en muros, que alternativamente, activan y organizan el lugar.

Paralelamente a las respuestas culturales al medio ambiente, que han generado tipologías como las del pueblo oasis amurallado, las plantas del desierto de todo el mundo han evolucionado a formas óptimas para desarrollarse en climas extremos. Por ejemplo, el cactus, una planta típica de los ecosistemas nativos del desierto de América, ha desarrollado un volumen máximo con una superficie mínima, para mitigar la exposición de la planta a los elementos y proteger su valiosa reserva de agua.Inspirado en la forma compacta y eficaz de los cactus, la propuesta concentra la población y las áreas del programa de investigación en un solo edificio híbrido, para otorgar al centro y a sus usuarios un espacio que ofrece un cómodo reparo tanto del desierto, como de la vida social, cultural e intensidad intelectual.

La misión intelectual del núcleo KAPSARC - la investigación sobre la energía y el medio ambiente-conforma el corazón icónico, alrededor del cual convergen en su totalidad el centro de programas público y privado. El núcleo toma la forma arquitectónica de un ovoide que emerge del entorno modelado, irradiando todos los otros programas y elementos del lugar desde su centro. El poder iconográfico ovoide transmite de forma palpable la identidad de KAPSARC al mundo exterior, al mismo tiempo, el centro de investigación funciona como corazón de la vida interna del complejo.

El icono también sirve como conector, y su red estriada se conecta formalmente con los espacios públicos clave, y su forma construida está integrada y entretejida con la estructura del campus.

Traditionally, walled oasis villages (such as the old city of Dir’iyah, the ancestral home of the Al-Sauds and the birthplace of the Saudi-Wahhabi Union) have incubated the expansion of culture in the region. The new KAPSARC master plan is rooted in the historical model of the oasis village: pools of recycled water naturally cool the air and create a habitable climate; gardens of endangered desert plants surround and weave between the architecture; and the iconic research center building rises at the core of the site, with walls radiating out to offer both symbolic and literal protection. As if generated by the dynamism of the research nucleus, the security walls and glowing light bars emanate from the center building becomes wall, which in turn activates and organizes the site.

The new King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) is a tangible symbol of environmental innovation. Morphosis architects proposal redefines the traditional campus into a three dimensional master plan of interconnected built form and planted landscapes that accommodate discrete zones of public and private program while also creating intersection and overlap between the two. Embedded in this sculpted environment, an iconic hybrid building emerges amidst a protected oasis of native desert flora and naturally cooling reflecting pools.

Parallel to cultural responses to the environment, which have yielded typologies like the walled oasis village, desert plants around the world have evolved optimal forms to thrive in extreme climates. For example, the cactus, a typical desert ecosystem plant native to the Americas, has developed a maximum volume with minimal surface area, to mitigate the plant’s exposure to the elements and protect its precious supply of water.
Inspired by the cactus’s compact, efficient form, our proposal concentrates the public and research program areas into a single, hybrid building, to afford the center and its users a space that offers both comfortable respite from the desert, and social, cultural, and intellectual intensity.

KAPSARC’s core intellectual mission - research on energy and the environment -forms the iconic heart, or nucleus, around which the entire center’s public and private programs converge. The nucleus takes architectural form as an ovoid that emerges from the sculpted landscape, with all other program and site elements radiating out from this core. The ovoid’s iconographic power palpably conveys KAPSARC’s identity to the outside world; simultaneously, the research center serves as the intensified hub for the inner life of the complex.

The icon also serves as a connector; its striated lattice formally connects with the key public spaces, and its built form is embedded in and interwoven with the structure of the campus.

El “Crystalline Landmark” diseñado por el estudio Schmidt Hammer Lassen architects para el frente del puerto central de Helsingborg, Suecia, se compone de un congreso de 16.900 m2, un centro hotelero y un área de vivienda de 17.100 m2.

Las nuevas instalaciones tendrán un importante papel en el proyecto urbanístico del paseo marítimo que recorre todo el largo del frente costero de la ciudad. La estructura se basa en una trama deforme que le da una estética cristalina, lo que le ha valido el apodo de "la cristalería". El hotel será de 12 pisos de altura, mientras que el Congreso será inicialmente de 3 pisos con adición de más niveles en el futuro.

El congreso y el hotel se dispondrán a lo largo del paseo marítimo para encontrarse con los bloques de apartamentos separados por una calle peatonal. El apartamento tendrá la misma trama de “cristal de sal”, mientras que la fachada tendrá un patrón rectangular reforzando aún más la apertura y ligereza del edificio. Los bloques de apartamentos varían de dos a nueve pisos. La unidad más alta se ubica en la esquina norte de la manzana ofreciendo sol y luz del sur a los 130 apartamentos.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen architects: Crystalline Landmark for Helsingborg

The crystalline landmark designs by Schmidt Hammer Lassen architects for the central harbor front of Helsingborg, Sweden will consists of a 16,900 m2 congress, a hotel facility and a 17,100 m2 housing area on Helsingborg. The new facilities will play an important part in the ongoing development of the promenade running the length of the city waterfront.

The structure is characterized by a deformed grid structure that gives it a crystalline aesthetic, thus, coining its nickname 'the sale crystals'. The hotel is expected to be 12-storey high, while the congress will initially be 3-storey with added levels in the later future.

The congress and hotel centre will run along the sea promenade to meet the apartment blocks that are separated from the congress centre by a pedestrian street. The apartment will have the same 'salt crystal' grid while its facade will have a shifting rectangular pattern to further reinforce an element of openness and lightness to the building. The apartment blocks will vary from two to nine stories. The highest unit will placed in the north corner of the block to provide sun and daylight from the south to all 130 apartments.

'This scheme creates a range of varied and unique city spaces. It forms a life between the buildings, the accessible ground levels, and the new building has coherence with the city. El estudio con base en Atenas de los arquitectos portugueses João Prates Ruivo y Raquel Maria Oliveira de Grecia han sido anunciados como los ganadores del UPTO35, un concurso para diseñar un complejo de vivienda para estudiantes en Atenas, Grecia.

Llamado “18 Steps” (18 Escalones), la propuesta ganadora se distingue por sus ventanas en forma de cruz con habitaciones que van escalonándose gradualmente hasta el nivel del terreno.

El diseño fue elegido entre 242 propuestas por un jurado integrado, entre otros, por el arquitecto danés Bjarke Ingels. El proyecto de Ruivo y Oliveira será construído por los organizadores del concurso Oliaros, y los ganadores recibirán un premio de € 10.000 más € 30.000 de la Comisión.
Los ganadores serán premiados el 24 de marzo en el Museo Benaki en Atenas.

Portuguese, Athens-based architects João Prates Ruivo and Raquel Maria Oliveira of Greece have been announced as the winners of UPTO35, a competition to design an affordable student housing complex in Athens, Greece.

Called “18 Steps”, the winning proposal features cross-shaped windows with rooms arranged round a gradually stepped landing.

The design was chosen from 242 proposals by a jury that included Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.
The Ruivo and Oliveira’s project will be developed by competition organisers and developers Oliaros, and the winners receive a €10,000 prize plus €30,000 commission.
The winners will be awarded on 24 March at the Benaki Museum in Athens.

Situado en la orilla sur del río Han, Gimpo es una ciudad en el proceso de transformación de una economía agrícola hacia una economía basada en el consumidor.

La propuesta de los arquitectos G. Lab * 's, de Gansam Partners, para la Sala de Arte de Gimpo contempla el hecho de que la ciudad se está convirtiendo en un centro regional contemporáneo y el diseño también se refleja en la historia de la región.

Ubicada en el extremo oriental de una manzana de la ciudad, la sala de arte enfatiza el acceso de los peatones mediante la incorporación de un paseo agradable que nos introduce al diseño. La masa del edificio se eleva por encima del nivel de la calle para crear una plaza peatonal cubierta.

Estéticamente, la estructura brota de del suelo, el enramado se multiplica y envuelve el edificio. Esta estética estructural refuerza, al mismo tiempo, las raíces de Gimpo y la modernización, mientras que crea un interesante juego de luces y sombras.

Un Teatro Flotante anidado dentro del volumen del edificio permite diferentes niveles de apertura que enfatizan puntos de vista desde el interior y revelan el paisaje urbano.

Situated on the southern bank of the Han River, Gimpo is a city in the process of transforming from an agricultural economy toward a consumer-based economy. Seoul architects G.Lab*’s, of Gansam Partners, proposal for the Gimpo Art Hall embraces the fact that the city is emerging as a contemporary regional hub and the design also reflects upon the region’s history.

Located on the eastern end of a city block, the art hall emphasizes pedestrian access by incorporating a friendly walk into the design. The building mass is also lifted above the street level to create a covered pedestrian plaza.

Aesthetically, the structure sprouts from the ground, branches, multiplies, and envelopes the building. This structural-aesthetic reinforces Gimpo’s roots and modernization, while creating an interesting play on light and shadow.

A Floating Theater nested inside the building volume allows for varying degrees of apertures which punctuate views from the interior and reveal the cityscape below.

ProjektStudio ha diseñado una Alcaldía multifuncional en la esquina de un Dlouhá Zámecká Ostrava, en Moravia.
La Alcaldía incluye espacios comerciales en los niveles inferiores, mientras que los pisos superiores se pueden alquilar para fines residenciales o de oficina.

Para el diseño del edificio municipal, los arquitectos han combinado las formas históricas de la zona con una expresión contemporánea.
Inspirados en el tratamiento de las fachadas de los edificios existentes, mantienen el énfasis horizontal de los mismos, dotando al edificio de una fachada de textura cambiante, creando un efecto de textura irregular en todo el edificio.

El juego de triángulos en la fachada crea un efecto dramático y establece un quiebre de las bandas de los edificios tradicionales. Se ha variado el orden regular de las ventanas, éstas rotan y se combinan para formar nuevos ritmos de ventaneo.

"El efecto dramático en el nuevo edificio propuesto, se logró con el mínimo de dispositivos, y a su vez, es concebido de forma clásica, de modo que el nuevo edificio es nuevo y progresista, pero al mismo tiempo, acepta el carácter de su barrio, ", explicó el arquitecto.

Town House by ProjektStudio

ProjektStudio has designed a multifunctional townhouse at the corner of Dlouhá a Zámecká in Moravian Ostrava. The townhouse includes commercial spaces on the lower levels while the upper floors can be rented for residential or office purposes.
For the design of the townhouse, the architects have mixed the historical forms of the area with a contemporary expression.

Inspired by the historical horizontal emphasis of the facade treatment, the architects have shifted the facade creating an irregular textured effect across the building. This triangulated facade creates a new dramatic effect and provides a break from rows of traditional building faces in that area. The historical regular window ordering has been modified as windows rotate and combine to form new rhythms in the fenestration.

“Dramatic effect by the view at the proposed new building is reached with the minimum of devices but all at once in the classical way so that the new building is fresh and progressive, but at the same time it is accepting character of its neighborhood,” explained the architects.

Nord architects y 3xn han ganado el concurso para diseñar un plan maestro en Dinamarca.

Un centro cultural para escenografía, artes visuales y literatura pronto será construido dentro del marco histórico de la segunda ciudad más grande de Dinamarca, Aarhus. El nuevo centro cultural pretende ser un entorno inspirador que estimule la producción de las artes y facilite la interacción entre los distintos oficios artísticos, empresariales y educativos.

El plan maestro dispone una triangulación de las obras de construcción que permitirá establecer el programa de una interesante arquitectura con una planta baja abierta y transparente, con casas aterrazadas y azoteas ajardinadas. La propuesta de 3XN añade elementos de la naturaleza, con espacios verdes, inyectando una calidez rústica natural que juega con el carácter histórico de las salas existentes, antiguamente utilizadas para el comercio ferroviario.

El edificio se espera que sea un espacio flexible con el uso óptimo de más de 9.000 m2. El proyecto comprende la renovación de las salas existentes, junto a un nuevo edificio de habitaciones y auditórium de gran escala.

El techo del edificio aparece como una extensión del espacio verde - y de hecho tomará la forma de un gran alfombrado verde sobre el nuevo edificio. Hay una serie de otras iniciativas “verdes” que se añadan al proyecto - sobre todo con el fin de reducir el consumo eléctrico del edificio para la ventilación, las bombas y la iluminación. El Centro de Producción Cultural se espera que esté terminado en el 2012 y se realizará en colaboración entre el municipio de Aarhus, Dinamarca y la Fundación Realdania.

Nord architects and 3xn have won the competition to design a masterplan in Denmark.A new cultural hub for scenography, visual arts and literature will soon be constructed within a historical framework in Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus.

The new cultural center is meant to be an inspiring setting that stimulates production of the arts and facilitates the interaction amongst the various artistic métiers, business and education.The masterplan has a layout with a number of triangulating construction sites which will set the agenda for an interesting architecture with open and transparent ground floors, terraced houses and roof gardens.
3xn's proposal adds elements of nature, with green spaces injecting a natural raw quality which plays up to the historic nature of the existing halls which were used for rail freight in the past.

The building is expected to be a flexible space with optimal usage of more than 9,000 m2. The project is comprised of the renovation of the existing freight halls along with a new building with rooms and large scale auditoria. The roof of the building will appear as an extension of the green space – and indeed will take the form of a green ‘carpet’ over the new building. There are a number of other green initiatives that will be brought to the project – primarily with a view to reducing the building’s electricity needs for ventilation, pumps and lighting.

The cultural production center is expected to be completed in 2012 and is collaboration between the municipality of Aarhus, Denmark and the Realdania Foundation.

The winning team is comprised of 3xn architects, Hans Ulrik Jensen a/s, Exners Studio, Nord Architects and Søren Jensen Engineers.

Los arquitectos daneses COBE, en colaboración con los arquitectos públicos, Grontmij Carlbro y Bbartenbach Lichtlabor, ayer fueron premiados con el primer lugar en el concurso internacional para diseñar la nueva Estación de Trenes de Nørreport en Copenhague, Dinamarca.

La Estación de Trenes de Nørreport es la estación más concurrida en Dinamarca, con una concurrencia diaria de 250.000 personas. La nueva estación de trenes y el espacio urbano circundante será una nueva atracción para la zona y un lugar de reunión natural.

El proyecto está concebido como una serie de techos de formas redondeadas, casi flotantes, que cubren distintos pabellones de cristal. Todas las instalaciones de la estación serán visibles y de fácil acceso, la estación será un espacio público de bienvenida.

Con el objetivo de demostrar que Copenhague es una “ciudad en bicicleta”, el lugar de aparcamiento de bicicletas será un elemento visible y central en el futuro espacio urbano. Con el fin de crear una jerarquía clara entre la zona para las bicicletas y el área pública de la ciudad, todos los aparcamientos de bicicletas estan ubicados a 40 cm por debajo del suelo de la ciudad.

El aparcamiento de bicicletas será iluminado en la noche por innumerables luces de LED. Además, 11 torres de ventilación se situarán en la plaza que rodea la estación de tren. Ello permitiría disponer de aire fresco para los andenes subyacentes. COBE Architects win first prize for Norreport Train Station, Copenhagen

Danish architects COBE, in collaboration with public architects, Grontmij Carlbro and Bbartenbach Lichtlabor, were yesterday awarded first place in the international competition to design the new Norreport Train Station in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Norreport Train Station is the busiest train station in Denmark with around 250000 persons passing daily. The new train station and surrounding urban space will be a new attraction for the area and a natural gathering place.The project is conceived as a series of rounded, almost floating roofs covering individual transparent glass pavilions.

All station facilities will be visible and easily accessible and the station will be a welcoming public space.Aiming to show that Copenhagen is a bicycle city, all bicycle parking will be a visible and central element in the future urban space. In order to create a clear hierarchy between the area for bicycles and the area for city life, all bicycle parking is placed 40 cm below the city floor.
The bicycle parking will be lit by innumerable LED lights at night.

Furthermore 11 ventilation towers will be placed on the plaza surrounding the train station. They will provide fresh air to the underlying train platforms. The towers will also function as lighting on the plaza and as digital information pillars with fully integrated LED screens for information about train departures, cultural events, advertisement etc.

Este diseño continúa nuestro trabajo en el desarrollo de esta área, una de las principales rutas del sur de Londres. Las propuestas para un complejo de uso mixto incluyen un edificio de oficinas comerciales de 23 pisos, un edificios residencial de 42 pisos y uno más pequeño al oeste, junto con una nueva plaza pública que mejorará el tráfico de peatones de todo el lugar.

The design of this scheme continues our work on theredevelopment of this site on one of the major routes from southLondon into the City of London. The proposals are for a mixeduse development, which will include a 23-storey commercialoffi ce building, a 42-storey residential building and a smalleroffi ce building to the west, along with a new public squarewhich will improve pedestrian movement around the site. Themixed use nature of the site has allowed us to combine theenergy strategy of the two towers, with heat rejection from thecommercial building used to supplement the heat requirementsof the residential units.

The two tall buildings respond not only to the immediatecontext, but the wider cityscape, the form derived from thesite’s characteristics and its relationship to important landmarksacross London. The improved public realm around thebuildings is intended to create a new cultural hub within theSouthwark area, and form part of a chain of public spacesalong the south bank of the River Thames.

El diseño del mix Hang Lung Dou Mu Gong de Shenyang se propone crear un nuevo icono dinámico para el noreste de China, una de las ciudades más vibrantes y de mayor desarrollo.

Situado en el lado sur de la Plaza de la Ciudad con una amplia fachada sobre Qing Nian Da Jie, el lugar es sin duda uno de los sitios en desarrollo más convenientes de la ciudad.

El diseño de KPF ofrece dos torres de oficinas de formas dinámicas en la zona norte, que actúan como puerta de entrada al complejo desde la Plaza y sirve para reforzar el límite del conjunto.

Entre estos dos elementos hay una gran bóveda que cubre una plaza frente a la entrada principal del área de comercios. La zona central del mismo se sitúa un poco más al sur, lo que permite un fácil acceso a la última fase de la torre de oficinas y a la torre hotel. Por último, la parte sureste del sitio está reservado para los tres edificios de apartamentos con servicios y tiendas especialmente adaptados para las necesidades de los residentes de los apartamentos.

El lenguaje arquitectónico de los edificios se basa en una geometría ligeramente curvada, que pretende sugerir el flujo del río. Las torres de oficinas y el hotel rematan en un sutil corte diagonal para dar una sensación de espacio en el centro del complejo. Las torres de oficinas están concebidas como una familia de formas y están emparentadas a través del uso del mismo diseño de curtain wall. Estas torres están coronadas por formas flotantes de cristal que brillan durante el día y funcionan como faros en la noche.

SHENYANG CITY HANG LUNG PLAZA
The design for the Hang Lung Dou Mu Gong Mixed-use Development in Shenyang seeks to create a dynamic new icon for one of northeast China’s most vibrant and swiftly developing cities.

Situated at the south side of City Plaza with ample frontage on Qing Nian Da Jie, the site is undoubtedly one of the most desirable development sites in the city. KPF’s design features two dynamic office tower forms at the north site which act as a gateway from City Plaza to the development and serve to reinforce the edge of the part. Between these two elements is a large canopy which covers a plaza in front of the main retail entrance. The central zone of the retail mall is situated a bit further south, thus allowing easy access from the later phase office tower and the hotel tower.
Finally, the southeastern portion of the site is reserved for three serviced apartment buildings and retail stores specially tailored for the needs of apartment residents.

The architectural language of all buildings is based on a gently curved geometry, which is meant to suggest the flow of the river. The office towers and hotel slab taper subtly in section to open up a sense of space in the middle of the complex. The office towers are conceived as a family of forms and are united though the use of a consistent curtain-wall design. These towers are capped by floating crystal forms that sparkle during the daytime and function as beacons at night.

OMA gana el concurso para Stadskantoor de Rotterdam

Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), en colaboración con Werner Sobek y los ingenieros de ABT, ha ganado el concurso para Stadskantoor de Rotterdam, un nuevo edificio para el ayuntamiento de la ciudad que albergará los servicios municipales, oficinas y unidades residenciales. El ganador fue anunciado esta mañana por el concejal de la ciudad Hamit Karakus.

El diseño, liderado por los socios de OMA Reinier de Graaf y Rem Koolhaas, fue elegido entre cinco propuestas de estudios de arquitectura holandeses después de un período de consulta pública y las deliberaciones de un jurado de expertos, que comentó: "El diseño de OMA fue la perfecta combinación de innovación y adecuación para el entorno".

OMA wins competition for Rotterdam’s Stadskantoor

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), in collaboration with Werner Sobek and engineers ABT, has won the competition for Rotterdam’s Stadskantoor, a new building for the city hall that will accommodate municipal services, offices, and residential units. The winner was announced this morning by city alderman Hamit Karakus.

The design, led by OMA partners Reinier de Graaf and Rem Koolhaas, was chosen from five submissions by Dutch architecture companies following a public consultation period and the deliberation of an expert jury, which commented: “OMA’s design was the perfect combination of innovation and suitability for the surrounding context.”

OMA conceived a modular building with repeated units gradually set back from the street as they rise into two irregular peaks. The building’s composition of smaller cells creates an impressive, complex form when viewed from Coolsingel, one of Rotterdam’s main arteries, and allows for subtlety and adaptability as the Stadskantoor abuts the adjacent municipal building from the 1950s, the Stadstimmerhuis.

The Stadskantoor’s innovative structural system generates maximum efficiency and versatility both in construction and in program: units can be added or even dismounted from the structure as demands on the building change over time, and can adapt to either office space or residential parameters as desired. Green terraces on higher levels provide the possibility of an apartment with a garden in the heart of urban Rotterdam.

The building’s concept of flexibility – together with a climate regulated by warm air stored in summer and released in winter, and vice versa, and the use of hi-tech translucent insulation in the building’s glass façade – allowed OMA to meet the design brief’s requirement of making the Stadskantoor the most sustainable building in the Netherlands.

Reinier de Graaf commented: “Rather than posing as the city’s next superlative, the design for the Stadskantoor is partly a building, partly an urban condition – a skyline in its own right. The design attempts to mediate between the adjacent town hall, post office and Stadstimmerhuis. Through an intentional ambiguity, the mass immerses itself in the city’s diverse architectural periods, absorbing the scales and styles of its immediate context.”

Preparado para obtener el nivel Gold en la certificación LEED, la Aldea Vertical diseñada por Graft Lab Architects es uno más de los proyectos eco-arquitectónicos en el desierto de Dubai. La estructura es un desarrollo de uso mixto preparada para viviendas, hoteles e instalaciones de entretenimiento, que a su vez funciona como un gran colector de energía solar.

La “Aldea Vertical” es un desarrollo residencial, de hoteles y entretenimiento que utiliza la más poderosa fuente de energía renovable en el desierto, el sol.

Diseñado para reducir las ganancias térmicas y maximizar la producción solar, la Aldea contiene edificios que están constituidos por losas que se sombrean en el lado norte del terreno, buscando reducir la penetración de radiación solar prolongada.

Por otra parte, el lado sur del terreno está equipado con colectores solares que automáticamente se posisionan siguiendo el recorrido del sol. Esta energía se porciona y redistribuye a través de los techos.

El techo solar se comporta como una hoja, con nervaduras que ramifican la energía solar en unidades menores, que además de estructurar el sistema en sí, transporta la energía, en este caso, en la forma de agua caliente que se mueve de vuelta al edificio donde es utilizada para reducir el consumo del aire acondicionado y otras labores domésticas.

Bajo los techos se ubican los espacios de escala urbana como cines, restaurantes, tiendas y teatro que se alternan en grado de privacidad y escala entre la franja de entretenimiento principal hacia el sur y las torres residencail y de hoteles hacia el norte.

Los edificios residenciales y de hotel han sido inclinados y apoyados primeramente para crear puntos de interés, otorgando una ubicación única de cada losa, y a la vez creando una potente y constantemente cambiante silueta a medida que uno recorre el terreno.

El espacio entre las losas se abre, se enlaza, desaparece y luego reaparece, ofreciendo un juego teatral de volúmenes que queda expresado a cabalidad en el programa de entretenemiento y teatro.

El centro de ventas está concebido como un oasis en el desierto, capaz de generar y mantener un micro clima delicado, un destino paradisíaco a donde los usuarios querrán llegar y disfrutar.

Agua Elemento protagonista en el oasis, se utiliza para separar y unir al mismo tiempo los distintos paisajes –el existente y el nuevo.

Luz El elemento natural más abundante, se canaliza a través de orificios en el techo durante el día y por una red de polos de fibra óptica en el paisaje por la noche.

Vegetación Un componente único en un oasis, se utiliza para crear experiencias táctiles, de aromas y color, mediante la adición de varias especies de árboles y plantas florales.

La arquitectura en sí es una serie de cubículos multi-nivel circulares programáticos, fusionados por los elementos del paisaje, una piel reactiva y un techo perforado.

Cada uno de los cubículos crea el espacio necesario para exposiciones, salas de reuniones y circulaciones verticales, generando una entidad arquitectónica única y fluida.

The sales center is conceived like an oasis in the desert, able to generate and sustain a delicate micro-environment - a paradisiacal destination that users want to arrive and experience.

Water- the element protagonist in the oasis- is used to separate and unite simultaneously the different landscape- existing and the new.

Light- the most abundant natural element - is channeled through pin holes in the roof during day and by a grid of fiber optic poles in the landscape at night.

Vegetation- a unique component in an oasis-is used to create haptic experiences of scent and color by the addition of various species of trees and flowering plants.

The architecture itself is a series of programmatic multi-level circular cubicles, congealed together by landscape elements, a reactive skin and a stippled roof.

Each of the cubicles creates necessary space for displays, meeting rooms and vertical connections, providing a single fluid architectural entity.

El ganador del concurso para el diseño del estadio principal de los 17° Juegos de Asia en Incheon, en Corea del Sur, ilustra un nuevo nivel de diseño sustentable en los estadios de Asia. El estadio albergará 70.000 personas para el principal evento en el 2014 y después se reducirá a una sola tribuna de 30.000 asientos para transformarse en un Parque Urbano de la ciudad de Incheon. La firma de arquitectura, Populous, antes HOK Sport Venue Event, desarrollará el diseño del estadio de Incheon, con la firma local Heerim Architects and Planners.

El director de Populous, Andrew James, dijo que la clave del éxito del nuevo estadio, será su funcionamiento en el modo de legado. 2014 Incheon Asian Games Main Stadium Populous

The competition-winning design of the main stadium for the 17th Asian games in Incheon, in South Korea, illustrates a new level of sustainable design in stadia in Asia. The stadium will hold 70,000 people for the main event in 2014 and will reduce down to a single sided grandstand for 30,000 afterward as a People’s Park for the city of Incheon. The global architecture firm, Populous, formerly HOK Sport Venue Event, is designing Incheon stadium with local firm Heerim Architects and Planners.

Populous Senior Principal, Andrew James, said the key to the new stadium’s success, will be its operation in legacy mode.
“The stadium explores the successful marriage of temporary and permanent. The stadium design is based on an asymmetrical configuration with the main corporate and management facilities located on the permanent western side, creating efficiencies both in terms of construction and operations. The Eastern side will be a lighter solution, the temporary modular seating structure will disappear after the games, and the stadium structure integrate into the local landscape.”

Symbolism is important to Korean culture. Populous project architect, Daekwon Park said the traditional Buddhist ritual Seung Moo dances, provided the image that reflected perfectly the drama of Incheon stadium – flowing form and space around dynamic movement.

“In architecture, as in dance, dynamic movement creates form, but can also be recognized by the space voids created around its form. The yin and yang of complementary opposites within a greater whole are represented inside the form of the master plan of the stadium, and the left over space around that form, becomes the main access to the building.”

“The Seung Moo dancer extends his arms, the stick he is holding is almost a continuation of the long sweeping sleeves of his robes. The main stadium roof likewise extends; at one end leading to the main plaza, beckoning people in; at the other merging with the landscape, creating a singular fluid movement.“

Un concurso fue recientemente iniciado por la ciudad de Chungju en Corea del Sur, solicitando propuestas para un monumento conmemorativo de las Naciones Unidas para el Parque de la Paz de esa ciudad. Uno de los proyectos fue el de la firma de arquitectura con sede en Londres ACME , que recibió el tercer lugar por su trabajo.

Compuesto por una asamblea de 1.500 asientos, dos salas de conferencias, un teatro y espacios de exposiciones, Acme basó su diseño en la actual organización de las Naciones Unidas.

La ONU está formada por naciones individuales, y como una metáfora ACME proyectó un cubo compuesto de células más pequeñas que se unen, formando la forma final.
Cada célula tiene por objeto representar la naturaleza colectiva de las Naciones Unidas y proporcionar servicios y funciones diversas, desde exposiciones a educación, conferencias, oficinas, restaurantes, eventos y plataformas públicas. Acme cree que el memorial debe representar la naturaleza de las Naciones Unidas, donde muchas naciones se unen para crear una sola entidad, pero sin perder su identidad individual.

Acme UN memorial space

A recent competition was initiated by the city of Chungju in South Korea, asking for proposals for a UN memorial for the city's UN (united nations) peace park. One of the projects was London-based architecture firm acme who received third place for their piece. Comprised of a 1,500 seating assembly, two conference halls, a theatre and exhibition space, acme drew on the actual organization of the United Nations for their design.

The UN is formed by individual nations, and as a metaphor acme designed a cube comprised of smaller cells which come together forming the final shape.

Each cell is meant to represent the collective nature of the United Nations' identity and provide various amenities and functions from exhibitions to education, conference, office, restaurant, events and public viewing platforms.

Acme believes that the memorial should represent the nature of the United Nations, where many individual nations come together to create one entity, but without losing their individual identities.

El estudio inglés Amin Taha Architects ha elaborado el plan maestro para un Complejo Hotelero Residencial en Andalucía (España). El encargo consiste en diseñar un Hotel/Spa de 5 estrellas y 200 residencias, que puedan funcionar simultáneamente todo el año.
El verdadero desafío está relacionado con la logística del lugar, con pendientes muy marcadas, y en "cómo crear un precedente para el desarrollo sustentable, a lo largo de una costa que está desapareciendo bajo la fuerte urbanización. ¿Cómo evitar la destrucción del motivo que nos lleva a estar ahí? ¿Cómo crear una comunidad creíble, con espacios sociales de trabajo que van más allá del concepto de residencia?".

El enfoque del diseño, siguiendo principalmente las directrices dadas por la altura del sitio, se dirigió al control pasivo del medio ambiente por medio de la masa térmica. Mediante el relleno de áreas y cortes en la roca el complejo estará básicamente "enterrado" bajo la vegetación local y recogerá el agua de lluvia para regar las zonas verde comunes.

El vidriado se ubicará de forma de evitar la radiación excesiva durante los meses cálidos, favoreciéndola, sin embargo, durante el invierno y se utilizaran chimeneas elevadas para la ventilación cruzada. El estudio todavía está trabajando en soluciones para lograr el objetivo de cero emisiones de carbono y energía renovable.

El tema de la sustracción (excavaciones) y adición (construcción) también se reitera en la piscina pública que se conecta a la terraza exterior y a las vías peatonales expandiéndose para crear un contexto urbano articulado. La jerarquía de los espacios públicos se centra en los hoteles, cuyas instalaciones son un poco fragmentadas y aisladas dispuestas de forma tal que se pueda rodear la plaza del pueblo.

The challenges we saw and highlighted through the interview process were in part related to the design/construction logistics of the very steep site but mostly targeted at how to set a precedent for sustainable development along a coastline that is disappearing under heavy urbanisation? How to avoid destroying the reason for being there in the first place? How to form a believable community with working social spaces that go beyond the serviced apartment concept?

Our approach was to combine planning height guidelines with passive environmental controls mainly through thermal mass. With part cut and part fill the development would essentially be buried under local flora with grey and rainwater storage irrigating the more heavily landscaped social areas. Glazing being set far enough in to avoid solar gain during hotter months but allow it during winter and with cross ventilation brought in using soar chimneys. The ‘dug-in carved-out’ theme is continued with communal pools that join to external terraces and pedestrian routes and expand in areas to create an urban framework. With a hierarchy of public spaces centred at the hotel whose facilities are slightly fragmented to stand alone as it were around the village square

El alcalde De Luca: "Otro proyecto de alta calidad urbanística para Salerno"

Durante una conferencia de prensa convocada el lunes, 20 de abril a las 11:30 horas en el Salón de la Bandera del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad de Salerno, el arquitecto Dominique Perrault presentó al alcalde de Salerno, Vincenzo De Luca el proyecto de recalificación ambiental de una antigua cantera en la frontera entre el municipio de Salerno y Baronissi.

Acogiéndose a una indicación de la Municipalidad de Salerno, la familia Rainone ha encargado al célebre profesional francés el proyecto de reciclaje para asegurar la alta calidad del diseño urbano que caracteriza a todas las intervenciones diseñadas y realizadas en la ciudad, no sólo por la comuna de Salerno, como en este caso, sino también por la actividad privada.

Perrault ha propuesto la creación de Zenith, un original complejo de edificios que, haciendo referencia a su forma, se "cuelga" como un pulpo con ocho tentáculos en las paredes de la cantera abandonada. La estructura de la obra es modular, una serie de círculos concéntricos que contienen - en sus interiores y exteriores - salas y lugares para eventos y espectáculos, espacios para exposiciones, tiendas, oficinas, aulas, estacionamientos.

El proyectista prevé también la construcción de un hotel y un mirador conectado al Zenith con un funicular espectacular. Se ha dedicado especial atención al ahorro de energía y a la elección de materiales que se adapten armoniosamente con el medio ambiente.

El Zenith es una obra que se llevará a cabo con la pertinente inversión privada. Durante la presentación el alcalde de Salerno, Vincenzo De Luca, ha apreciado la calidad y la originalidad de la propuesta del proyecto que se enmarca perfectamente en el contexto del gran “laboratorio de construcción” de arquitectura internacional de la ciudad de Salerno, donde se encuentran las obras de, entre otros, David Chipperfield (Cittadella giudiziaria), Zaha Hadid (Stazione Marittima), Ricardo Bofill (Fronte del Mare e Piazza della Libertà), Santiago Calatrava (Marina d'Arechi) Jean Nouvel (ex Pastificio Amato), Massimiliano Fucksas (ex Fonditori).

"La Comuna de Salerno se compromete- declaró el alcalde de Salerno, Vincenzo De Luca – a acelerar el trámite burocrático y administrativo tanto como sea posible para realizar la obra, especialmente en vista de sus importantes implicaciones comerciales, económicas y de empleo. The Zenith designed by D. Perrault for environmental restoration of an abandoned quarry

Perrault has proposed the creation of Zenith, a unique complex of buildings, referring to its shape, it hangs like an octopus with eight tentacles on the walls of the abandoned quarry. Al Ain, también conocida como la ciudad oasis, es bendecida con un paisaje de condiciones únicas que favorecen la vida vegetal y el verde en un ambiente desértico.

El emprendimiento prevé llevar esta condición de oasis a todo el conjunto al mismo tiempo que toma ejemplo de los fuertes y las ciudades islámicas tradicionales, que están densamente agrupadas para proveer sombra y mejorar la mejor circulación del viento.

Estos principios tradicionales ofrecen una manera pasiva y simple para luchar contra el ambiente desértico sin un exceso de ayudas tecnológicas.

El plan maestro intenta utilizar esos principios y adaptarlos al contexto moderno para crear una fuerte comunidad eco-sustentable en Al Ain.

Inspired by the natural features of Al Ain, and the dense urban fabric of traditional islamic cities, the master plan for Al Nasseem creates an unique synergy between urbanity and landscape. Al Ain,also known as the oasis city, is blessed with a unique landscape condition that promotes plant life and supports greenery in a harsh desert environment.

The development is envisioned to bring this oasis condition to the fore while also taking its cue from traditional islamic cities and forts that are densely packed to provide self shading and improve wind circulation.

These traditional principles offer a passive and simple way to combat the harsh desert environment without excessive technological aids.

The master plan attempts to use these principles and adapt them to the modern context to create a strong sustainable community in Al Ain.

MAD Arquitectos de Beijing ha completado recientemente el diseño para el Centro de Convenciones de Taichung, su primer proyecto encomendado por el gobierno de Taiwán.

Taichung requiere un punto de referencia metropolitano que pueda ir más allá de lo local para renovar la vida urbana y redefinir el paisaje cultural de la ciudad, lanzando a Taichung dentro de la elite mundial de ciudades culturales.

Esto requiere conceptos arquitectónicos únicos y un nuevo tipo de filosofía arquitectónica. Ya no caracterizados por simples consideraciones de altura o impacto visual, los edificios más emblemáticos deben, ante todo, fomentar la recreación pública e inspirar la comunicación y la imaginación, la redefinición de nuestra relación con la cultura y la naturaleza.

Este proyecto está concebido como un tejido continuo de arquitectura y paisaje, una visión futurista basada en un espíritu naturalista.
El diseño hereda de la arquitectura china, la actitud hacia la integración global y el orden del espacio, empleando la esencia de la filosofía oriental de una armónica relación entre los humanos y la naturaleza.
Ante la enorme escala del proyecto, el conjunto arquitectónico deja de ser una serie de bloques individuales, para presentarse como una forma colectiva.

Los espacios resultantes se enfocarán en concebir el orden natural que emerge del aire, el viento y la luz, fomentando una resonancia entre el hombre y la naturaleza. El lugar y el programa de este proyecto son intrínsecamente de alta energía. La "montaña" proporciona una piel calmante y unificadora, aún así, bajo su superficie calma, existen potenciales topológicos esperando a ser descubiertos.

Por un lado, el perfil arquitectónico en forma de cráter y las rotondas resultantes son consecuencia de las tensiones del lugar. Por otro lado, simultáneamente, el conjunto da forma e influencia el entorno circundante, estableciendo un diálogo entre arquitectura y paisaje.

La superficie de las "montañas" es un sistema de piel en forma de pliegues ecológicamente compatible, de una alta tecnología. La envolvente en forma de panal de abejas como provee un flujo de aire al edificio, manteniendo el consumo de energía en un mínimo mediante la utilización de la energía solar.
Los patios abiertos que conectan con cada montaña están integrados a una secuencia natural de espacios abiertos.

Al igual que la búsqueda de una convivencia armónica entre personas y naturaleza (ejemplificada en la Ciudad Prohibida y en los antiguos jardines chinos), este proyecto busca una mayor semántica en sus cualidades no materiales, espacios cercados con el más alto espíritu naturalista.

Un árbol solitario, un trozo de bambú, o un estanque, se convierten en figuras centrales del espacio. Esta aproximación al desarrollo sustentable no se basa en la tecnología, sino en la filosofía tradicional y la estética.

Beijing based MAD Architects has recently completed the design for the Taichung Convention Center, its first project in Taiwan commissioned by the Taiwanese government.
Taichung requires a metropolitan landmark that can go beyond the local to renew urban life and redefine the cultural landscape of the city, launching Taichung into the arena of world class cultural cities.

This requires unique architectural concepts and a new kind of architectural philosophy.
No longer characterized by mere considerations of height or visual impact, landmark buildings must first and foremost foster public recreation and inspire communication and imagination, redefining our relationship to culture and nature.This project is conceived as a continuous weave of architecture and landscape, a futuristic vision based on a naturalistic spirit. The design inherits Chinese architecture’s long-standing attitude towards holistic integration and order of space, employing the essence of the East’s philosophy of a harmonized cycle between human and nature.

In the face of the project’s enormous scale, the architecture no longer exists as a series of individual blocks, but instead is rendered as a collective form.
The resultant spaces come into focus in a natural order emerging from air, wind and light, fostering a resonance between human and nature.

The site and the program of this project are inherently high-energy. The ‘mountains’ provide a calming and unifying skin, and yet, under its calm surface, there are topological potentials waiting to be discovered.

On the one hand, the architecture’s crater-shaped formation and resulting rotundas are the outcome of found site conditions.
On the other, it simultaneously shapes and influences the surrounding environment, opening up a dialogue between architecture and landscape.

The surface of the ‘mountains’ is a high-tech, eco-friendly pleated skin system. The smocking-like envelope provides air flow to the building while keeping energy consumption at a minimum by utilizing solar energy.

The open courtyards that connect the individual mountains are integrated into a natural sequence of outdoor spaces.

Like the quest for a harmonic coexistence between people and nature exemplified by Forbidden City and ancient Chinese gardens, this project seeks greater meaning in its non-material qualities, spaces encircled with the upmost naturalistic spirit.

A single tree, a patch of bamboo, or a pond become central figures of the space. This approach to sustainable development is based not on technology, but on traditional philosophy and aesthetics.

El proyecto de Holzer Kobler Architekturen para el concurso del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo en Wroclaw es un diseño visionario que consta de dos elementos: las salas de exposición, que se conciben como neutrales cajas negras con el fin de centrarse en el arte que se mostrará dentro y para permitir la máxima flexibilidad en su uso, y amplios salones iluminados para eventos culturales, de aprendizaje y de vida (biblioteca, oficina y salas de conferencias, club de museo, restaurante, tienda, ...).

Este entrelazamiento de los espacios de exposición de “caja negro" con una muy limitada luz natural y el espacio abierto a la experiencia cultural y de aprendizaje está en el núcleo del concepto arquitectónico. La linealidad de la exposición nos guía en su circuito a una clara secuencia a través de la construcción, que vinculando la transparencia de la luz con la estructura más fluido que contiene la zona neural, la organización central de la función pública y los elementos culturales, como la cafetería, restaurante, salas de conferencias, biblioteca y los clubes.

La galería al aire libre / Jardín de Esculturas en el techo será parte del circuito de los visitantes, mientras que el Club del museo estará situado en la azotea y dará a sus miembros una vista exclusiva a través del jardín de la azotea hacia el centro de la ciudad donde se pone el sol.
El proyecto ha sido desarrollado en colaboración con Jean-Lucien Gay, arquitectura NAU, y Arup Berlín.

The project by Holzer Kobler Architekturen for the competition of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Wroclaw is a visionary design consisting of two elements: the exhibition halls, which are conceived as neutral black boxes in order to focus on the art that will be shown within and to allow for a maximum of flexibility in its use, and light spacious rooms for cultural events, learning and living (library, office and conference rooms, museum’s club, restaurant, shop, ...).

This intertwining of the “black box” exhibition spaces with very limited daylight and the open space for cultural experience and learning is at the core of the architectural concept. The linearity of the exhibition leads in its circuit in a clear sequence through the building, regularly linking into the transparent light and more fluid structure containing the neural, central organisation of public function and the cultural elements such as the café, restaurant, conference rooms, library and the clubs.

The Outdoor Gallery/Sculpture Garden on the roof will be part of the visitors’ circuit, while the Museum’s Club will be situated on the rooftop and give its members an exclusive view across the roof garden towards the city centre on the side where the sun sets.

The project has been developed in cooperation with Jean-Lucien Gay, NAU architecture, and ARUP Berlin.
